Chesham Estates have been selected as the Council’s preferred partner for the development of the former Honey Club site on West Parade in Rhyl. Chesham were one of a number of developers who expressed an interest in the site, but Chesham Estates experience and proposals for the site won favour and singled them out as the best developer for the job.
Their proposal is to develop a 50 to 60 bedroom budget hotel with a restaurant at ground floor – opposite the recently refurbished Apollo Cinema. They have already been in discussions with potential occupiers and are confident that they will have some well known companies signed up soon.
In the meantime, Denbighshire Council are progressing with plans to demolish the existing Honey Club building due to serious concerns about its condition and safety. The Council will be submitting an urgent application to the Welsh Government for permission to demolish.
With Chesham now on board, detailed design on the redevelopment of the site will start with a view to securing planning permission by Spring 2013. Construction could then begin that summer, with the new hotel and restaurant open for business in early 2014.
Up to 40 new jobs will be created as a result of this development, and the Council will be working closely with training providers to ensure that local people are skilled up and well placed to secure those jobs.
With the refurbishment of both the former Bee & Station Hotel and Costigans on site, work on the Foryd Bridge and Harbour scheduled to start in June this year, and work progressing to improve the housing in West Rhyl, the redevelopment of the Honey Club site is another big step forward in the regeneration of Rhyl.
