Diamond Jubilee Celebrations Fit for a Queen

The countdown has begun to the Bank Holiday weekend for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

There is plenty planned in the capital to celebrate this historic occasion.

On Saturday June 2, The 1st Queen’s Dragoon Guards will stage a home coming parade leaving City Hall at 12 noon with the parade going along St Mary Street, Mill Lane and finishing at The Hayes.

On Sunday June 3 residents and visitors to Cardiff are invited to attend the Cardiff Big Lunch.  St Mary Street becomes the place to meet for food, music and merriment. The Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant will also be screened in the heart of the city.

To end the Bank Holiday celebrations on Monday June 4, Cardiff joins a network of 2,012 Beacons lit by communities and individuals throughout the United Kingdom. The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Beacons will see thousands of beacons lit around the world to commemorate Her Majesty The Queen’s 60 year reign over the UK and as head of the Commonwealth.

The Council will also be supporting community organised street parties, just like the royal wedding of HRH Prince William and HRH Duchess of Cambridge many residents will be planning street parties in the capital.

The Council has put together top tips and advice on how to hold a street party, which includes information on whether licenses are needed, how to gain permission for road closures and other general advice. This information can be viewed on the Council’s website at www.cardiff.gov.uk/streetparties

Anyone planning a street party for the Diamond Jubilee weekend between June 2-5 should get in touch with the Council as soon as possible to discuss their plans. For road closure residents should contact the Council’s highways operations team on 029 2087 3294 or email [email protected]  For licensing issues they should contact  [email protected]

The closing date for road closure application is 14th May 2012.

Executive Member for Sport, Culture and Leisure, Cllr Nigel Howells, said: ““The Jubilee is a huge milestone in the history of Great Britain. There hasn’t been a Diamond Jubilee since 1897 when Queen Victoria celebrated hers. We need to make sure we mark this momentous occasion.

“We have planned some great events where the whole city can come together and celebrate. As a Council we will be supporting street parties and helping to ensure communities have a great time in a safe environment. Last year’s Royal wedding proved that Cardiff likes to hold street parties to celebrate historic royal occasions. The city held a staggering 52 parties across the capital, at one point it was reported we were only second to London.

“ I would encourage residents planning on holding a street party to get in touch as soon as possible to find out what is required to hold a street party.”
