A cinema has had to organise extra screenings of the new Dr Who film because the interest in it has been out of this world.
There will be no easy hiding place as Zygons and Daleks take over the Odeon at the Eagles Meadow shopping centre in Wrexham, but with not one, but three, Doctor Who’s on hand the outcome of Saturday’s Time War will be in the balance.
The 50th anniversary of the BBC’s science fiction series, Doctor Who, will be celebrated with a special programme screened on BBC 1.
The Odeon is one of the cinemas showing the film simultaneously in 3D. as well as simultaneously on chosen 3D cinemas across Britain.
According to cinema manager Andy Elvis, interest in the one-off drama event has been unbelievable and he is encouraging Dr Who fans wanting to witness the landmark screening to book early to avoid disappointment.
He said: “Interest in the screening has been incredible and in my 17 years in cinema management I have seen nothing like it for a performance such as this.
“We initially planned to show the Day of the Doctor on one screen but all available seats sold out so quickly we increased it to two screens as well as putting on a later recorded screening at 9.30pm.
“However, we have now had to increase that to three screens and put on a Sunday matinee show at 2pm the following day.”
He added: “It seems families are choosing to come along and enjoy the event on the big screen rather than watch on TV even though we haven’t any sofas to hide behind!
“I’m also expecting quite a few to turn-up in Dr Who costumes, it really does promise to be quite an event.”
The special episode will see David Tennant, the 10th Doctor, return alongside the current Doctor, Matt Smith.
Veteran actor John Hurt will play a past incarnation of the Doctor who existed sometime between the eighth and ninth ones.
Billie Piper, recently voted the nation’s favourite Doctor Who companion, will return as Rose Tyler while Joanne Page will play Queen Elizabeth 1, and become the third actress to play the part in the history of Doctor Who.
The Daleks and the Zygons, shape-shifting aliens who first appeared in 1975, will provide the scares.
Eagles Meadow manager and self-confessed Dr Who fan Kevin Critchley is delighted people are coming out to watch a unique event, such as the Day of the Doctor, on the big screen.
He said: “Odeon staff do a great job in ensuring their customers enjoy a great, comfortable and safe night out.
“The concept of showing Doctor Who, The day of the Doctor, on big screens simultaneously to the TV broadcast is an inspired one and I’m sure it will be a huge success and something that will be repeated in the future.
“Interest in the screening has been huge and we look forward to welcoming Doctor Who cinema goers to Eagles Meadow.“
