Dragon Carnival comes to Newport Festival 2010

Belle Vue Park’s Bandstand will be playing host to a battle between two tribes of warring dragons at the Newport Dragon Carnival spectacular on Friday 4 and Saturday 5 June.

The free event, which is organised by South Wales Intercultural Community Arts (SWICA) and Newport City Council is part of the Newport Festival 2010 and will feature two 30 minute shows each day, one at 2pm and one at 4pm.

The project has involved community workshops in Pill and will feature Newport Pill Youth Dance Group and Newport Community Circus. The carnival is set to global musical written by Musical Director Rob Smith, which involves drumming from West Africa and the Caribbean including local samba drummers Batatan.

SWICA Artistic Director, Steve Fletcher, who wrote and directed the show says: “The dancers from Pill are the most energetic SWICA has worked with in our 21 year history. Normally our own dance tutors would play the key roles of the Red and White Dragon Queens, but in Newport these central roles will be played by local stars Caprice Wilson and Nicole Read. The four shows promise to be spectacular family fun with amazing costumes, performers on spring-heeled stilts and an impressive finale.”
