Dragons’ Den-style search for sustainability “stars”

Organisations from across Wales have been pitching their sustainable development ideas to a Green Dragons’ Den board at the Hay Festival this week.

The “prize” is four grants of £10,000 which will be used to put the projects into action and the successful challenge fund organisations will be invited back to the Hay Festival next year to showcase their work and share their experiences.

Environment Minister Jane Davidson, who will present the awards at Hay on Friday (4 June), said:

“I think this is a unique and fun approach to finding new ideas to find long-term sustainable solutions that protect resources for future generations.

“There are many creative and innovative approaches to sustainable development which organisations, communities and individuals are often aware of. I want this competition to reap the harvest of those ideas.”

The four sustainable development workshops – called Hay on Earth – have been  running all week. The purpose of these workshops is to bring together organisations who are keen to contribute to sustainable development, showcase their best practice, and share their experiences – so we can help to develop active networks of organisations working together.

The workshops will also encourage organisations to identify and develop new, innovative projects and approaches that will help take forward sustainable development in Wales.

Each of the Hay on Earth workshops is themed and covers four separate issues:

  • Low carbon transport and accessibility;
  • Sustainable agriculture and local food;
  • Businesses and the development of new low carbon, low waste goods and services; and,
  • Promoting sustainability in homes and communities.

The projects will be judged by an independent panel of experts, dubbed a Green Dragon’s Den.
