Dragons secure scrappy win

Newport Gwent Dragons 36 – 5 Aironi Rugby

Jason Tovey scored 19 points as the Dragons recorded their second win of the season’s Magners League with an unconvincing triumph over Italians Aironi.

Tovey has seen his season blighted by injury but took the opportunity to knock over five penalties and two conversions before making way for Matthew Jones in the 68th minute.

A wet and cold Rodney Parade saw Tovey give the home side a 9-0 lead after 20 minutes with three successful penalties before Aled Brew, who earlier this week was invited to train with the Wales squad, touched down for the first try of the match.

Tovey duly obliged with the conversion before adding a further penalty before Giovanbattista Venditti scored the Italian’s only points of the game with a try just before the break.

Tovey added an early second half penalty before winger Adam Hughes continued his good form with a try in the 67th minute and right on the stroke of full time.
