Dramatic end to Aberystwyth lifeboat Flag Day

On Saturday 28th August the Aberystwyth RNLI lifeboat crew held their annual Flag Day street collection, and the lifeboat was on display to the public on the north promenade. The crew were preparing to return the lifeboat to the boathouse when they were made aware that two people were in difficulties on the cliffs north of Clarach Bay.

A member of the public approached the lifeboat crew and told them that three friends had been walking from Borth to meet him in Aberystwyth but had rung him to say that they were in trouble. A male member of the group had managed to scramble to the top of the cliff, but two females were stuck and very afraid.

A member of the lifeboat crew spoke to one of the females to ascertain their exact position, told them to stay calm and not to move as help was on the way, before passing the information to Milford Haven Coastguard who despatched the Aberystwyth Coastguard Cliff Rescue Team.

As launching from north beach had been problematical in the past, it was decided to transport the lifeboat to south beach and launch the boat from that location. When the lifeboat arrived on scene they found that the cliff rescue team had located the trapped females approximately 50 feet down the cliff, and stood by while both females were assisted them back to the cliff top.
