Duet: Coast and Country paintings by Dorian Spencer Davies and Paul Martin at Oriel Mwldan

Dorian and Paul were both born and raised in Pembrokeshire, and have been friends since attending Carmarthen Art College together in the 1980’s. Both went on to pursue successful careers in graphic and visual arts in London.

Dorian has worked for several London Publishers, and held the post of Senior Art Editor for Dorling Kindersley Children’s book division, where he designed and producing over 40 books for DK including the highly successful and world famous ‘Incredible cross sections’ books. He returned to Wales in the 1990’s where he began illustrating and painting from New Quay. Here the painting side of his work started to develop with the influence of the sea very much in his blood.

Paul gained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in graphic illustration in Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts before going on to work as an illustrator for Titan Books, Marvel Comics, 2000 AD and Judge Dread. He has also been commissioned by clients such as The National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, Woburn Elephant Sanctuary, The Cradle of Human Kind in South Africa, before starting his own design agency MC Corporation, specialising in designing exhibitions for clients such as Renault, BMW and Volkswagen. He returned to Wales to live in 2009. Paul works in watercolour, oils, Acrylics and charcoal but his passion is for watercolour.

Both artists are heavily influenced by their surroundings, and there is no doubt that growing up and living on the wild and idyllic coast of West Wales has had a huge impact on both their work and careers. We are delighted to welcome Paul and Dorian to Oriel Mwldan, Cardigan, for their very first exhibition together.
