South Wales Police have announced that planned WDL demonstrations and UAF counter demonstrations passed off peacefully. There were only three arrests which were made for low level public order offences by officers policing the demonstrations.
Demonstrations were held by the UAF and WDL in both Swansea and Cardiff. The arrests were all made in Cardiff, and were all in relation to individual breaches of Section 14 of the Crime and Public Order Act, which means that the individuals failed to follow instructions from officers and therefore did not act within the parameters previously agreed between all parties for a lawful protest.
Those arrested include two men, aged 48 and a 53, and a 45 year old woman.
Assistant Chief Constable Nick Croft said:
“The demonstrations have passed without significant disruption to the wider community and without injury to the protesters and I would like to express my thanks to the vast majority of people who demonstrated peacefully.
“There were some flashpoints throughout the day which may have concerned some onlookers, but to an extent, this was anticipated between two large groups who hold opposing views.
“The main thing is that nobody got injured as a result, and that the vast majority of protesters went about their activities in a responsible and orderly manner, meaning that only three arrests had to be made.
“There should have been no surprises for anyone attending the event, as from the outset, I stated to those planning on getting involved in the demonstrations that they were quite entitled to express their views lawfully, but that robust action would be taken in response to individuals who engage in illegal activities.
“In policing terms, the day has been successful for South Wales Police. Our stated aims and objectives were met. I would like to thank communities across Cardiff and Swansea for their co-operation and understanding, and also pay tribute to police officers who policed the protests in Swansea and Cardiff. They acted extremely professionally today to ensure the safety of themselves, of the demonstrators, and of the general public.”
