Once again this year members from the Gwynedd Domestic Abuse Forum are joining an international campaign to combat violence against women.
25 November is the UN International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women. It was established to commemorate the assassination of three sisters, Patricia, Minerva and Teresa Mirabal from the Dominican Republic during Trujillo’s dictatorship on 25 November 1960.
Women and men use this day and the following 16 days leading up to International Human Rights Day on 10 December to campaign for the end of violence against women and girls.
One in four women in Wales and England will experience domestic abuse by their partner or ex-partner at some time in their life. In the UK a woman is assaulted in her home every six seconds. Domestic Violence is the largest cause of death in women worldwide aged 19-44. In the UK two women a week are murdered by a partner or ex-partner.
Gwynedd Council, as members of the Gwynedd Community Safety Partnership will also be showing their support for the campaign. Gwynedd councillors will be wearing the white ribbon during this particular week. Other members of the partnership will be undertaking various initiatives to show their support, the local Police for example will also endeavour to wear the ribbon.
Members of the forum will be campaigning and raising awareness throughout the period by:
- Attending the Bangor City vs Connah’s Quay football match on 27 November
- Attending the Porthmadog vs Airbus Broughton football match on 28 November
- Information stand by the canteen in Ysbyty Gwynedd on 27 November, staff throughout the hospital will also be campaigning by wearing white ribbons.
- Campaigning through the local press and media
- Campaigning in various supermarket stores throughout Gwynedd
- Information will be disseminated through all main Gwynedd Council receptions throughout the county, libraries throughout Gwynedd, local health clinics, various local schools and local colleges
The stands will provide information regarding White Ribbon Day, information regarding domestic abuse including helplines and the opportunity to obtain a white ribbon. White Ribbons will not be chargeable; however donations will be gratefully received. Any donations collected will go towards the Gwynedd Domestic Abuse Forum.
