Street lights at risk of collapse in residential areas in Swansea are being removed by Swansea Council.
The Council has begun the latest phase of routine structural testing of around 4,000 steel lighting columns to check they are structurally safe.
Previous testing has resulted in some of the 19,000 steel columns erected in Swansea being removed immediately to prevent them collapsing.
Further columns which are not at risk of collapse but are in a poor state will also be removed in an ongoing programme of work being undertaken in the city.
Once the testing phase is completed, a replacement programme will be developed prioritising the replacement of lighting across Swansea.
Carl Humphrey, Head of Streetscene in Swansea Council, said, “We are continuing our testing programme to get a better idea of the condition of street lights throughout Swansea.
“In previous phases we have found that some were in such a deteriorated state they were at risk of collapse and were removed immediately.
“If any columns tested during this phase are found to be severely corroded, we will take them down immediately in order to protect public safety.
John Hague, Cabinet Member for the Environment, said, “Maintaining street lighting is an essential part of our responsibility in terms of providing a safe environment for pedestrians and motorists.
“The work we are currently doing will enable us to provide the high standards of service that residents expect from us.”
Residents can contact the Council’s Highways Service to report any faults relating to street lighting such as a hole or crack in the lighting column. To report a fault, telephone freephone 0800317990.
