This week marks the end of an era for a Swansea community library.
The poor condition and limited usage of Brynmill library on Bernard Street means it’s being closed to the public from Thursday January 7.
A fortnightly mobile library service is being introduced in its place that will offer local people access to more stock than ever before as well as continued use of the reservation and catalogue systems.
The service will visit twice every other week and will park up by YGG Bryn-y-Mor on St Albans Road on a Monday and a Thursday. The Monday session will be held every fortnight from January 11 from 9.50am to 10.50am. The Thursday session will be held every fortnight from January 14 from 2.10pm to 3pm.
People can also travel to the state-of-the-art Central Library in the Civic Centre on Oystermouth Road.
Statistics show visits to Brynmill library have dropped by 34 per cent since 2005 and that 49 per cent of items issued to Brynmill customers were actually issued at Central Library.
The poor condition of the Brynmill library building is also regularly causing damage to library stock.
Cllr Graham Thomas, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Recreation and Tourism, said: “We take great pride in libraries across Swansea and this can be illustrated by the opening of the new Central Library as well as the refurbishment of our facilities in Gorseinon, Pontarddulais, Gowerton and Brynhyfryd.
“The falling use and poor condition of Brynmill library means it’s common sense to close the facility. People who use the library will now get access to more stock at our community mobile service that will travel into their community or they can go to Central Library in the Civic Centre.
“People of all ages across Swansea now have more access to books, CDs, DVDs, free internet and other library services than ever before.”
