Enviro Education Centre Gets Pupils’ Green Light

Visitors continue to flock to Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s recycling centre in Bryn Pica to learn more about how their waste is recycled to ensure a more sustainable future for their community and the world at large.

And now a brand new mini Material Recycling Facility (MRF) has been opened on the site, allowing children a first-hand opportunity to seeing how all of our recyclable waste is sorted every day of the week.

The MRF is a conveyor belt on which bags filled with recyclable material is emptied and then sorted by hand into different categories – such as paper, tins and plastic for further treatment.

The mini-MRF was installed to help inspire and educate local schoolchildren still further on the importance of recycling waste and reducing the amount sent to landfill. Children from Llwydcoed Primary School were the first to try out the next equipment.

Schools, groups and colleges can incorporate the opportunity of using the mini-MRF with a visit to the popular Amgen Visitor Centre which is open five days a week. The Centre allows groups of 12 or less to learn more about the many methods and facilities made available to residents of the county borough in an effort to increase the quantity of waste recycled every week.

Visits include a presentation on recycling, a landfill safari and films on various aspects of the many groundbreaking projects implemented by the Council.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Frontline Services Cllr Anthony Christopher said: “The installation of the new mini Material Recycling Facility will undoubtedly be well received by the many schoolchildren who visit the site and learn more about the environment work they can participate in for the benefit of their community and the world at large.

“By seeing the equipment work for themselves they will learn about what happens to their recycled waste, how it is sorted into different materials and how they can help reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.

“I would encourage all schools and organisations throughout the county borough to take the opportunity to visit the site and see for themselves the excellent work being undertaken by Rhondda Cynon Taf to increase our recycling rate year on year.”
