Coleg Gwent is promoting equality and diversity with a number of events to celebrate difference and promote fairness.
Organised by the College’s Students’ Union, the equality and diversity events launched in style at Coleg Gwent’s Pontypool Campus on Monday 3 February with African drumming workshops, hula-hooping, Zumba classes and representatives from local organisations.
Coleg Gwent’s own support services provided information and guidance as well as visiting organisations such as Women’s Aid, Monmouthshire Youth Service, Developing People and Diverse Cymru.
Lindsay Whittle, Member of the Welsh Assembly for South Wales East, visited the event on Monday, he said: “Events like these provide brilliant support for students, and it’s fantastic to see it organised with them in mind. Everyone is different and we need to recognise this and celebrate it.”
Cathy Rogers from Diverse Cymru, said: “These events provide us with a fantastic opportunity to get young people involved with the sector we represent and show the importance of promoting equality to make a real difference to people’s lives.”
Organiser Adam Smith, Coleg Gwent Students’ Union Sabbatical President, is delighted by the success of the College’s equality and diversity events so far: “The atmosphere was great, with lots of students talking to exhibitors,” he said.
“If this event has helped even just a handful of people then CGSU will have achieved its goal. I cannot thank everyone enough for making Monday’s event such a success and I’m looking forward to the rest of our planned events at our other campuses.
“CGSU is run by students for students and the hard work of all the Student Officers to organise these events has been outstanding.”
The Diversity Road show will visit Coleg Gwent’s City of Newport Campus on Wednesday 5th February, the Blaenau Gwent Learning Zone on Friday 7th February and Usk Campus on Monday 10th February.
