The importance of EU support to the Welsh economy and jobs creation will be highlighted when Communities Minister Jeff Cuthbert welcomes a European Commissioner to a leading aviation plant in South Wales today (Tues 11th Feb).
He will join EU Commissioner László Andor, who is responsible for employment, social affairs and inclusion, on a tour of GE Aviation’s aircraft engine maintenance plant in Nantgarw. Commissioner Andor is in Wales to see how EU funds are being invested in the country.
GE Aviation is world leader in the production of jet engines for commercial and military aircraft. The company has benefitted significantly from the EU’s European Social Fund (ESF) through the Welsh Government’s flagship £160 million Modern Apprenticeships and £114 million Skills Growth Wales projects.
Through its engineering apprenticeship programme, GE Aviation provides apprentices with college and work-based training. Apprentices also have the opportunity to study a foundation degree while they are with the company.
Communities & Tackling Poverty Minister Jeff Cuthbert will welcome the Commissioner to the plant where they will tour the facility and meet with apprentices, many of whom have been successful in gaining permanent employment.
Jeff Cuthbert said:
“It is a pleasure to welcome Commissioner Andor to Wales to see how GE Avaition is one of many advanced manufacturing companies in Wales that we are supporting to grow and prosper through EU funds, providing crucial employment opportunities in the area.
“This is another great example of how people across Wales benefit from the membership of the EU, supporting the creation of jobs, trade and developing the nation’s skills. EU investment and the free movement of people and goods is central to our economy and our future.”
In Caerphilly alone EU projects have assisted 40,700 individuals. Of these, over 4,500 have been helped into work and 14,700 have gained qualifications. It has also helped more than 3,500 individuals enter into further learning.
