Events and activities in Gwynedd libraries

Gwynedd Council libraries are organising exciting free events for children during the Summer holidays this year. From Caernarfon to Barmouth, interesting activities to encourage children to read regularly throughout the summer are available.

The 13th Summer Reading Challenge, Circus Stars, has been launched to run until 10 September, 2011 in Gwynedd. Children aged from four and 11 are encouraged to read four or more books of their choice during the Summer holidays and they will get collectable incentives and rewards – plus a certificate and medal for every child who completes the challenge.

The Summer Reading Challenge is extremely popular and successful which reaches about 750,000 children annually across the libraries of the United Kingdom. There is more information about the Circus Stars challenge on the interactive website, www.circus-starts.org.uk.

Nia Gruffudd from Gwynedd Council library service commented, “Reading is not only a great source of enjoyment for children, but also an essential life skill. Instilling a passion for reading early on is crucial to help children develop their skills and our libraries can play a central role in supporting this.

“I encourage everyone to pop along to their local library this summer to take advantage of what’s on offer as this challenge is a fantastic way to get our children reading.”

Other events have been organised in selected libraries across Gwynedd. The ZooLab activity has been set up to run during the Summer where the children will get an opportunity to see and handle live small creatures. It starts in Pwllheli Library on Wednesday, 17 August 2011 from 10.30am-11.30am and then moves across Gwynedd libraries to finish at Penygroes Library on 19 August 2011 from 3pm until 4pm.
