An even brighter future is in prospect for Bargoed, after Cabinet agreed to ambitious plans for the development of the second phase of the Bargoed retail plateau recently.
Cabinet gave the green light for officers to begin pursuing a series of developments for the second phase of the programme.
These include a proposed cinema/digital entertainment centre with an associated restaurant facility, a mixed commercial and residential (apartments development) and a landscaped public car park.
Cllr Ron Davies, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Planning said, “Bargoed is one of Caerphilly county borough’s landmark towns and a key strategic destination for retail, leisure and business, and we are keen to help bring these exciting developments to fruition”.
Cabinet also approved the acquisition of a largely disused garage block in the vicinity of the site, which following demolition would greatly improve the physical environment in this area.
The next stage in the process is a public consultation relating to the proposals, before a detailed development brief of the phase 2 site is drawn up and marketed to developers.
Initial expressions of interest will be sought before formally going out to tender later in 2011. A further report will go to Cabinet on funding options prior to any tendering process.
The first phase of the development on the 2.2-hectare retail plateau is set to comprise an anchor foodstore, unit shops, a petrol filling station (on a separate site) and approximately 390 parking spaces.
