Regeneration plans for Pontardawe town centre are taking a major step forward.
Work on three projects is expected to start in the next six weeks following final approval by councillors at a meeting yesterday (Thursday 17th February).
All three projects will mark the first stage of Neath Port Talbot Council’s plans to shape the future of Pontardawe town centre and pave the way for more regeneration projects. The plans follow the successful public consultation on the proposals last year.
The three projects will bring in a £1 million for the regeneration of Pontardawe.
Contractors will soon be on site to start work on Cwm Du Glen bridge, funded by a multi stream grant and a contribution from Neath Port Talbot Council.
Environmental improvements will also start on the site of the former Motorworld retail outlet providing a new gateway to Pontardawe town centre.
Urban improvements are being carried out at Herbert Street at a cost of £600,000. A new public square is planned featuring new paving, street furniture and tree planting as well as new lighting and disabled parking.
Neath Port Talbot Council Leader, Ali Thomas, said, “This is excellent news for Pontardawe and I am pleased to see that the Council is fulfilling its commitment to the people of Pontardawe.
“These projects will kickstart the plans the Council has to regenerate Pontardawe town centre which I’m sure will be welcomed by traders and residents.
“This will further enhance the existing town centre and reinforce Pontardawe’s position as an attractive place to live, work and visit.”
The plans for Herbert Street and Cwm Du Glen bridge are on display at Pontardawe Arts centre.
