A scheme to help improve the health of people who might be at risk of heart disease has been given a boost with extra funding from the the Local Authority Partnership Agreement (LAPA).
The Physical Activity Programme (PAP), which is delivered by the Council’s Leisure Services, will act as a second phase to the Exercise Referral Scheme, a project that sees health professionals refer people at risk of heart disease for exercise to promote their health and wellbeing.
It will offer an additional 16 week period of support for post exercise referral clients, so that they may continue to attend group exercise sessions for just £1.
The sessions will be available at all Council Leisure Centres including Penylan Library and Community Centre.
New funding will enable up to 20 staff from across the city to receive qualifications and training so that they can deliver the specialist scheme.
They will provide support, advice and direction to those graduating from the exercise referral scheme, encouraging them to participate in regular physical activity and continue in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
The programme aims to reduce the incidence of obesity in adults, therefore reducing the occurrence of secondary disease risk factors associated with obesity and encourage participants to use their local facilities and community centres.
