A special exhibition celebrating the centenary of Girlguiding in the UK can be seen at Rhondda Heritage Park, Trehafod, until this weekend.
The Girl Guides – now known as Girlguiding UK – evolved from the Scouting movement in the early years of the 20th century. As part of the centenary celebrations, an exhibition of memorabilia donated by local people is on display at the Heritage Park until Sunday, November 7, 2010.
Margaret Jervis, Deputy Lieutenant of Mid Glamorgan and Ambassador for Girlguiding, launched the exhibition and Rhondda Cynon Taf’s Deputy Mayor, Cllr Sylvia Jones, who was a girl guide herself in the late 1940s, was a guest at the launch. Many local members of the Girlguiding movement, including Brownies and Guides, went along to see the photographs, uniforms and other items on display.
Grandmother of seven Cllr Jones, who was born in Dinas, Rhondda, joined the Guides at the age of 11 in the 1940s and was a member of 1st Tonypandy St Andrews. A photograph of her with fellow girl guides is included in the exhibition.
All are welcome to view the exhibition from 100 years of Girl Guiding at Rhondda Heritage Park until Sunday, November 7, 2010, which is open between 9am – 4.30pm with admission free.
