Extra Consultation Metting Announced

An extra public meeting has been arranged for people to find out and express their views about a proposal to transfer Welsh-medium primary school Ysgol Treganna to new-build premises on Sanatorium Road, Canton.

The Council is currently consulting on the proposal which would involve Ysgol Treganna transferring to new premises on Council-owned land off Sanatorium Road and expanding to a three form of entry Welsh-medium primary school with nursery while Ysgol Tan yr Eos would close with pupils transferring to the enlarged Ysgol Treganna on the new site.

The meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 9, 7pm, at Fitzalan High School when interested parties will be able to air their views and submit feedback on the proposal.

The growing demand for Welsh-medium education in this area together with the increase in population as indicated by WAG population figures released in 2010, has led officers to develop this proposal to respond to these issues effectively. No existing English-medium provision will be closed or reduced in capacity as a result of this proposal.

This forms part of the consultation period which runs until February 28. Parents, school staff, governors and others in the community who would be affected by the proposal have been sent copies of the consultation document and are invited to respond.

An exhibition on the proposal remains on display at Canton Library for the duration of the consultation period.

Views expressed via the consultation document and at public meetings and drop-in sessions will be recorded and considered as part of the decision making process. Alternatively, views can be e-mailed to [email protected] Any comments, including those submitted by e-mail, must contain the full name and postal address of the person making the comments.

Following the consultation, the Executive will consider a summary of views received and will then decide whether to proceed with the proposals or not.

Executive Member for Education and Lifelong Learning, Cllr Freda Salway, said: “This is a further opportunity for everyone interested to find out more about our proposal and have the chance to submit their views for consideration.”
