Cardiff Council is working hard to deal with the backlog of waste collection caused by the extreme winter weather.
The city experienced some of the worst winter weather conditions for 30 years during late December and two significant falls of snow leading up to Christmas meant waste collections were delayed for several weeks in many parts of the city and teams were redeployed to assist with snow clearance.
Since the thaw the recycling and waste collection teams have been working very hard to get things back on schedule, with double shifts being worked; additional crews employed and staff working overtime in order to catch up.
Although collecting food and general waste has been the priority during the catch up period, the council is also carrying out extra collections for green bags where capacity allows to make sure Cardiff continues to recycle as much as possible.
While collections should return to a normal schedule next week, we ask residents not to put green bags out before they are next due for scheduled green bag collection in their area.

Following the heavy snow last month whilst main roads became accessible, some side streets and pavements were too icy and unsafe for collections to take place.
Every effort was made to minimise any disruption, whilst ensuring the safety of the members of the public, council’s waste teams and vehicles.
The council waste teams followed normal collection days from Monday, December 27 to Friday, December, 31 however poor conditions still caused problems and prevented collections from some parts of Cardiff early in the week.
Additional teams were sent out between Christmas and New Year to catch up on as much outstanding recycling waste as possible that could not be collected the week before. This meant that some vehicles visited wards on days they would not normally be present to take recycling and waste already on the streets. Staff also worked over the New Year Bank Holiday period to help clear the backlog.
Council leader Rodney Berman said: “The extreme weather conditions have caused obvious problems to waste collection across the city, particularly in north Cardiff, but council staff are working extremely hard to clear this backlog. This has been a difficult period for all local authorities but I would like to praise staff for their dedication and hard work during this challenging time.”
