The training pool at Swansea’s Wales National Pool is going to get a facelift over the festive period.
The pool was closed earlier this week so it can be drained and the tiles re-grouted as part of the centre’s on-going maintenance programme.
The Olympic-sized main pool will remain open and managers will be re-scheduling sessions to accommodate swimmers who would normally use the training pool.
Jane Draper, general manager at the Wales National Pool, said: “We are committed to ensuring the facilities we operate are maintained to the highest standards.
“Our regular users know that we usually carry out maintenance work over the Christmas period because it’s our quietest time of year and so it causes the minimum amount of disruption.”
She added: “Draining and re-filling the training pool is quite a complex operation. It’s not as simple as pulling a plug or turning on a tap and because of that it will extend the length of time it will be out of action.”
The operation to re-grout the training pool will involve drilling out the old grout, replacing any loose or cracked tiles, two deep cleans and between seven and 10 days of simply allowing the new grout to dry and harden.
The training pool is due to re-open to the public on January 11. In the interim some training sessions for elite swimmers have been re-scheduled to give as much time as possible in the main pool to regular users of the training pool.
The first to use the re-grouted pool will be swimmers in a competitive swimming gala between January 8 and 10.
The Wales National Pool will be open throughout the festive period except for Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. Full details of the revised swimming sessions can be found on the website at www.walesnationalpoolswansea.co.uk or by calling 01792 513513.
