Fairtrade Fortnight Celebrations in the City

Fairtrade Fortnight begins on February 28 with the event running until March 13.

Fairtrade Fortnight is an important event in the city’s diary, with the capital being the world’s first capital city to be given Fairtrade city status.

This year Fair Trade Wales are taking over an empty shop in the Morgan Arcade for the duration of the Fortnight. The shop will host a variety of events over the two weeks including a Fairtrade market, film screenings, and wine tasting.

On March 7 Fair Trade Cardiff will host a Fairtrade event in the Fair Trade Wales shop. Those who come along to the shop from 2pm will be able to taste Zaytoun products from Palestine, including their famous olive oil. Two producers from Palestine will also give a special talk at 5pm about their experiences of Fairtrade and how it has helped them.

The theme of this year’s Fairtrade Fortnight is ‘Show Off Your Label’, with the event giving focus to the cotton trade. During the city’s Fairtrade Fortnight celebrations there will be an attempt to break a world record for the longest length of bunting; workshops will run throughout the fortnight at the temporary Fair Trade Wales shop in the Morgan Arcade.

Executive Member for Environment, Cllr Margaret Jones, said: “Cardiff became the first Fairtrade capital city in the World in 2004 and we are very proud of this achievement and actively promote fair trade and Fairtrade Fortnight.

“We are once again working closely with Fair Trade Wales to make sure there are plenty of celebrations taking place during Fairtrade Fortnight. The Fairtrade shop will provide a great opportunity for people in Cardiff to find out more about Fairtrade and Fairtrade products.”
