This week marks the start of Fairtrade Fortnight. During this fortnight awareness is raised about Fairtrade and getting better prices, decent working and living conditions and local sustainability in the developing world.

Many Schools in Caerphilly County Borough Council are part of the Fairtrade Schools Scheme. The Fairtrade Schools scheme is a campaign that gives primary and secondary school students the opportunity to develop their knowledge and understanding of global issues.

The Fairtrade Schools scheme is not only about teaching students about trade issues, the scheme aims to teach how they can become involved in changing the world, encouraging pupils to make a difference through supporting and promoting Fairtrade in schools, they can empower farmers and workers in marginalised countries.

The scheme involves schools working towards 5 goals which are setting up a Fairtrade Committee that meet at least once a term, developing a Fairtrade Policy, committing to sell, promote and use Fairtrade products as much as possible, ensuring the whole school learns about Fairtrade by incorporating it into three subject areas in each of two year groups and promoting and taking action for Fairtrade at least once a term in the school and once a year in the wider community

Cllr Rhianon Passmore, Cabinet Member for Education & Lifelong Learning said “It’s important for young people to understand about Fairtrade and the impact it has on the developing world.  By learning about issues such as these at a young age, children can be involved in changing the world around them.”

There are 56 schools registered for the Fairtrade Schools Scheme and are working towards the Fairtrade Schools Award and 7 have achieved the Fairtrade Schools Award.  These Schools are Ysgol Y Lawnt, Tiryberth Primary, Hendredenny Park Primary, YGG Caerffili, Fochriw Primary, Cefn Fforest Primary and St James Primary.
