Family’s plea to domestic violence victims

The family of murder victim Bethan Callaghan has urged victims of domestic violence to seek help and contact police following the conviction of Terry Andrews at Merthyr Crown Court yesterday (Tuesday, May 25).

Terry Andrews, 36, of Matthewstown, Mountain Ash, was found guilty of murdering 20-year-old Bethan following an eight-day trial at Merthyr Crown Court and was told he must serve a minimum of 16 years of a life sentence.

Bethan was found with serious injuries at an address in Pentwyn Avenue, Matthewstown, on Tuesday, September 29 and later died in hospital.

Andrews had claimed her injuries were sustained when she was hit by a car.

In a statement, released by South Wales Police on their behalf, Bethan’s family said:  “As a family we have endured eight months of pain and anxiety but today we can finally lay Bethan to rest knowing justice has been served.

“If there is anything positive to be drawn out of this tragedy it is that we would hope that people, who are victims of domestic abuse, no longer suffer in silence.

“We would ask them to find the courage to make that one phone call as there are people that care and can help.

“We would also like to thank South Wales Police in their great work in bringing Terry Andrews to justice.”

Senior Investigating Officer Detective Inspector Mark Lewis said: “Our thoughts today, as always are with Bethan’s parents, relatives and friends who I hope are given some closure as a result of the jury’s decision.

South Wales Police is committed to tackling domestic violence and we always pursue perpetrators while also working in conjunction with our partners to provide support for victims.

“I would urge anyone who is suffering from domestic violence to seek support as there is help out there.

“I would also personally like to thank the community of Matthewstown, Mountain Ash, for their support during the investigation.”
