If you are looking for a special Father’s Day treat on Sunday 19 June, call in at Cardiff Castle, where we are promising not only the stunning spectacle of an authentic medieval Joust, but also some activities designed for Father’s Day.
See your Dad put through his paces in the Dad’s Drill – a medieval Boot Camp in full view of hundreds of spectators with marching, combat training and weapon practice. All Dads will also be encouraged to join in the Battle of Agincourt – an ingenious re-enactment which involves most of the crowd. And if your father has not performed his duties well this year – the family can always put Dad in the stocks!
The headline event of the day is of course the medieval Joust. The Knights of Royal England will be psyched up and raring to go, all set to wow audiences with their horse back stunts, knock-about humour and death-defying demonstrations of the noble art of jousting. In a stunning display of horsemanship, skill and sheer nerve, the knights advance from lancing hoops and hitting targets to the main tournament itself and a real grudge match between the knights, with ancient scores to settle. Witness horses galloping at lightning speed, see lances splinter into matchsticks and the knights hit the ground in bone-crushing falls in this authentic medieval spectacle, played out against the beautiful backdrop of Cardiff Castle.
With a medieval encampment to explore, strolling minstrels, sword fighting, combat displays, junior jousting skills and drills, storytelling sessions of spell-binding myths and legends, visitors will easily imagine they have stepped back centuries. Be part of the action and come in your own medieval costume – the chance for children to be a princess, prince or a knight for the day. New for this year is an open invitation to take part in some ‘Strlctly Medieval’ – a fascinating look at the dances played out at court to the accompaniment of authentic musical instruments.
