The site of the Fforestfach industrial estate fire has been demolished and cleared.
Contractors have taken down the former Mettoys factory where approximately 5,000 tonnes of tyre flock, a by-product of tyre recycling, had burned for three weeks.
The demolished building along with the remaining tyre flock has been removed from the site.
Swansea Council and Environment Agency Wales have overseen the clean-up on-site and steps have been taken to make the site secure.
Roger Thomas, Group Manager with Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service, said the scene of the demolished site would enable people to see the scale of the incident.
“This was a major fire that presented unique challenges to the agencies dealing with it.
“Now that the site has been cleared people will be able to see the size of the site and gain a better understanding of the scale of this incident.
“We are grateful to residents and businesses in the area for their patience and understanding during this incident. Similar fires elsewhere have burned for months but due to the fantastic team effort of all the agencies we brought this incident to an end much sooner than we had initially anticipated.”
Due to the nature of the burning material, it would have been impossible to extinguish this fire using traditional fire-fighting techniques. Specialist plant equipment was brought in to demolish the unit, measuring 90m x 90m, and remove the material in sections before immersing it in large water-filled tanks and temporary dams created on-site.
The multi-agency response group brought together Swansea Council, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service, South Wales Police, Environment Agency Wales, Public Health Wales and Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board.
The cause of the fire is being jointly investigated by police and the fire and rescue service.
