Five young fire-fighters from across Caerphilly county borough received awards for completing a certificate in basic fire-fighting from Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Mayor, Cllr John Evans, at a ceremony recently.
The five youngsters, Christopher Sarah, Rhys Cronin, Samuel Logan, Hywel Pedrick and Haydn Williams, who are members of the Young Firefighters Association, were awarded their Intermediate BTEC Basic Fire Fighting certificates at an awards ceremony held at Penallta House, Caerphilly County Borough Council’s headquarters.
Cllr John Evans said, “I was delighted to invite the boys along to receive their awards, which are much deserved. They are the fire fighters of tomorrow who will in future years help to keep our communities safe, and they should feel extremely proud of their achievements.”
As part of the course, the young fire-fighters are taught skills used by fire-fighters, such as training them on how to use the equipment, and taking part in drill demonstrations using the hose, hydrants, ladders and breathing apparatus.
The Young Firefighters Association is a uniformed youth organisation operated by South Wales Fire and Rescue Service. The aim of the scheme is to engage with young people aged between 13 and 17, and provide them with a means of interacting with the fire and rescue service and learn about its importance and partnership with the community.
It also educates young people on fire safety issues and encourages the young fire-fighters to promote fire safety in the home and community.
The scheme also helps inform the young people of the dangers of anti-social behaviour, especially where this involves fire setting, car crime and the making of malicious phone calls to the fire and rescue service.
Caerphilly Young Fire-fighters meet every Tuesday from 6.30pm until 9pm.
