First Minister challenged over future of Minor Injury Units

Clwyd West AM Darren Millar has challenged the First Minister over the closure of Minor Injuries Units in his constituency.

The Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board announced the temporary closure of Minor Injuries Units in hospitals in Colwyn Bay and Ruthin as part of a package of measures to respond to winter pressures across North Wales. It has indicated that it intends to re-open the facilities in the Spring.

Darren Millar called upon the First Minister to review Welsh Government budget priorities to safeguard the long-term future of the units, which local residents fear are being undermined due to financial pressures.

Speaking in the Senedd this week, Darren said:

“The minor injury units at Colwyn Bay and Ruthin Hospitals provide invaluable services to my constituents and it is important that they are reinstated as soon as possible.

“The closure of these units has been a huge blow for patients, who are now having to travel further for access to services which were previously close to home.

“It is now very clear that the Welsh Government’s NHS cuts are having a devastating impact on frontline services. Ministers must look again at their budgets to ensure that our hospitals get the cash they so desperately need.”
