Two local politicians have said they are pleased that the Welsh Government has committed itself to the implementation of hourly services on the Cambrian Line.
During the first session back after the summer recess, Montgomeryshire Assembly Member, Russell George, raised a number of concerns with the First Minister in relation to rail services in Mid Wales, including overcrowding on the Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth route and the urgent prioritisation of additional services on the Cambrian line.
Commenting Mr George said:
“I welcome the news that the Welsh Government is in discussions with Arriva Trains Wales regarding the time tabling of new train services.
“The improvement of the Cambrian Line is an extremely important aspect in delivering economic growth in Mid Wales. Passenger and business groups have been waiting on the Government to fulfil its part of the bargain and bring forward the revenue funding to complete the enhancement project.
“There are of course legitimate safety concerns for people living in communities like Llanbrynmair and Talerddig that need to be addressed before any new services commence and I am pleased that work is underway to eliminate un-manned level crossings in those areas. However, the news that investment in the line remains a key part of the Government’s National Transport Plan is long overdue.
“I am concerned about recent reports from constituents that there have been carriage reductions which have led to severe overcrowding.
“I very much hope that we will receive confirmation from Arriva Trains Wales that the reduction in carriages was a temporary issue. Passenger safety must be a priority am I am pleased that the First Minister has taken these concerns seriously.”
Newtown County Councillor, Frank Torrens, also welcomed the news on the hourly service and said:
“This is something that we have been lobbying on for some time now and I am pleased that the Welsh Government is taking this forward.
“However, to have these services time tabled for the early spring, we need decisions to be make as soon as possible.”
