First steps to zero waste

Green Glyncoch – the exciting new initiative to turn the area into the country’s first zero-waste village – is already gaining momentum with even more households realizing the importance of recycling their waste.

Since the start of the year the percentage of residents who now recycling their household waste has risen from 42% to a promising 55%. And although there’s still a long way to go, the news displays the ongoing success of the scheme.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Fronline Services Cllr Anthony Christopher explained: “Green Glyncoch is a hugely ambitious, but realistic, attempt to transform Glyncoch into the UK’s first zero-waste village and with the ongoing support of residents and businesses alike this can be achieved.

“This rise in figures is the highest experienced in Glyncoch since the Council’s kerbside recycling collection scheme began and is clearly indicative of the fact that the community is beginning to rally around more than ever to support Green Glyncoch.

“With their support we can succeed in our endeavours and although we continue to raise awareness with residents, blitz streets and local open areas with our litter pickers and encourage more dog owners to join our Good Dog Ownership Scheme, it remains with the residents themselves to get involved and support a project that will bring positive and lasting benefits to the entire community.”

The pioneering environmental project continues to raise awareness of the issues surrounding household waste as a team of Green Glyncoch staff visit residents with information and assistance.

The core of the team are tackling environmental awareness issues, and in particular are undertaking door knocking exercises to all properties on the estate, to improve the participation of both dry and food waste recycling – both of which are free services as part of the weekly kerbside recycling collection.

The team is also working with the Streetcare Awareness Team, undertaking talks and work programmes with the schools to raise environmental awareness in the village and the wider community.

The team is also working with all the businesses in the village, ensuring they are working towards the Zero Waste Village target, ensuring all clubs recycle their bottles and cans, the food outlets are recycling their food waste whilst the convenience stores have a ban on giving out plastic carrier bags in line with the stated intention of the Welsh Assembly Government.
