Join Flintshire Record Office for a First World War open day on Saturday 2 August 2014 between 10am and 2 pm.
Entry to the event on Rectory Lane in Hawarden is free and everyone is welcome. Highlights will include a World War I ‘Trace your Ancestors’ workshop, a talk by Viv and Eifion Williams from Flintshire War Memorials and an opportunity to see some original documents from the archive collections including letters, photographs, medals, WWI index cards and a death plaque.
Various exhibition boards will be on show, including ‘advertising in the local press during war time’, individual dedications to Flintshire men who served during the War and an exhibition prepared by students from Ysgol Maes Garmon following their research at the Record Office. There will also be activities for children and light refreshments.
Last year, the Record Office produced a World War I calendar with 50p from each sale donated to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. Flintshire County Council’s Leader and Armed Forces Champion, Councillor Aaron Shotton will be handing over a cheque on the day to the Secretary of the Hawarden/Ewloe/Mancot Branch of the British Legion, Mrs Joan Aird.
Councillor Aaron Shotton said: “I am delighted to be handing over a cheque to the Royal British Legion to support their charitable work. I would like to thank the Record Office for holding this event, which marks a respectful tribute to the men from Flintshire who served in World War I, many of whom gave their lives for the freedom which we all enjoy today.”
Claire Harrington, Principal Archivist at the Record Office said: “We are proud to play our part in honouring our Armed Forces. The Record Office holds many World War I records which will be preserved and available for future generations to see.”
