Preseli Pembrokeshire AM Paul Davies is supporting a petition launched by two school students calling for more trains for Fishguard.
Ysgol Y Preseli pupils Sam Faulkner and Joanna Griffiths are calling for regular daily services from the coast to Carmarthen and have already gathered 100 signatures, they’re taking their campaign online and onto mobiles too.
“All credit must go to these energetic youngsters,” said Mr Davies.
“They are quite right when they say that having this service would open up the whole of north Pembrokeshire to visitors as well as making life easier for local residents.”
“The two trains that currently service Fishguard are timed to meet the ferry, so one of them is in the middle of the night. That’s no use if you are a student trying to get to college or a teenager trying to go shopping.”
Mr Davies lobbied last year for five train services a day on the route but was dealt a blow in December when Network Rail’s Route Utilisation Strategy dismissed the idea.
The Welsh Assembly Government is due to consider the proposals in the very near future.
“North Pembrokeshire is a tourist hotspot that is currently difficult to reach by train. I wish these students every success,” Mr Davies said.
