Flintshire County Council’s Streetscene team praised

Flintshire County Council’s Streetscene team who ‘worked extremely hard in exceptional circumstances’ during the recent snow and icy weather have been praised by Executive members of Flintshire County Council.

Members of the team worked throughout the holiday period (and before it) to keep main roads and pathways clear of snow and ice. The Streetscene team comprises of over 400 workforce and staff from a variety of services who currently assist in the provision of Flintshire County Council’s winter maintenance service. 44 gritter drivers work in shifts around the clock during the extreme conditions, each gritting lorry covering a 70 mile routes twice in every shift

Councillor Tony Sharps, Deputy Leader of the Council and Executive Member for Environment, said:

“I would like to thank all members of the Streetscene team who worked extremely hard in exceptional wintery circumstances in the last few weeks. They really do work as a team, and it’s that team effort that has made the difference to what they’ve achieved keeping our main routes clear. Not only do I wish to thank those clearing the roads during this extreme weather, but the administrative staff have been wonderful too.”

The Streetscene team is also responsible for recycling and waste collections throughout the year, however when the large waste vehicles weren’t able to go out in extreme weather conditions due to health and safety risks, the waste and recycling team cleared roads and paths until conditions improved. The properties the waste and recycling team were unable to reach had their waste collected later the same week.

Aware that it was a key shopping day on the last Saturday before Christmas, employees from across the Streetscene services volunteered to work their day off in order to clear and grit the main shopping areas of the county in an attempt to keep businesses open in the run up to the Christmas period.

Councillor Nancy Matthews, Executive Member for Waste, said:

“I was so impressed with the hard work that was carried out by Council employees throughout this recent extreme weather. They worked above and beyond the call of duty and even came in on what would have been a day off. Employees worked extremely hard throughout the snowy period, not just at Christmas, and I’d like to thank them for their consistent effort during difficult conditions.”
