A review by Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales (CSSIW) has highlighted the positive support Flintshire Social Services provides to people with dementia and their carers. The report, released on 16 April highlighted the Council’s ‘Living Well’ service as a model of good practice.
‘Living well’ supports people with dementia to live at home by offering tailored support based on a clear understanding of their past life, personal strengths and wishes. Importantly staff have the discretion to vary the support provided according to the situation on the day.
Flintshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Social Services, and Older People’s Champion, Councillor Christine Jones said:
“I am proud that Flintshire is leading the way on dementia care, as recognised in this report. Our services such as dementia cafes, specialist extra care housing and quality home care support, where highly trained staff take time with people, give our residents the care they deserve.”
The CSSIW report recognises the value and focus the Council places on quality and responsive services and highlights the Council’s policy not to condense visits to support people at home into 15 minutes.
A report on the inspection will be presented to councillors at the Social Services and Health Overview Scrutiny meeting on Thursday 1 May. The report will be the first step in developing an action plan between Social Services and Health to build on good practice and further develop services and effective joint working.
