Flintshire’s Sport Relief success

Organisers of Flintshire’s two Sport Relief events would like to thank the hundreds of local people who took part and helped raise money for such a worthwhile cause.

Around 300 people took part in the Sport Relief Flintshire Mile at The North Wales Athletics Centre, Deeside College, and the Sport Relief Holywell Mile at Holywell High School had around 100 participants.

Helped by the fantastic media coverage and the great weather, the two Council-organised events were fully booked days before, with even more participants coming and signing up on the day itself.

The Flintshire Mile was started by Beverley Jones, Great Britain Paralympian, and the 300 strong Milers took part in a Mass Zumba warm up with local fitness instructor Netty Hodson.

The event was attended by families with toddlers and buggies, groups in fancy dress and individuals running as a personal challenge.

The Buckley Cheerleading Club, who are aged between four and 12 years old, were on hand to cheer participants through every mile of their challenge.

The Family Fun Day, organised by Deeside College, with bouncy castles, a penalty shootout competition, Tri Golf and a magic show, also attracted a good crowd, raising money for both Sport Relief and Cancer Research.

The Deeside event was organised by Craige Bowles, Physical Activity Officer at Flintshire County Council and Donna Welsh from Deeside College. The Holywell Mile was organised by Chris Birch and Ben Welsh at Holywell Leisure Centre.

Craige Bowles said: “A fantastic day and a fantastic way to not only raise hundreds of pounds for Sport Relief, but to provide an important opportunity for families to take part in physical activity together.”

Chris Birch said: “It was a great morning and the local Holywell residents raised several hundred pounds for Sports Relief.”

We are still awaiting confirmation of the final figure raised by both events.
