Rhondda Cynon Taf’s Deputy Mayor joined in the first birthday celebrations of Llwynypia’s Food Co-op this month.
Cllr Simon Lloyd was guest of honour at the anniversary event, which was held in Llwynypia Community centre by volunteers to thank the community for its support over the last year.
Thanks to an incredible effort by all, the Food Co-op has packed nearly 4000 bags with healthy, nutritious products to help everyone towards eating their five a day.
The event also included information stands from a wide range of organisations to offer advice and support to the community, this included BTCV, Keep Wales Tidy, Environment Agency Wales, Want to Work and the More card team from Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Leisure Services.
Pupils from Pontrhondda and Llwynypia Schools visited the day and sampled fruit smoothies and soups made from fresh produce, before enjoying fitness classes that emphasised the importance of healthy eating and regular exercise.
Their visit to the celebrations was rounded off with a session from the BTCV who helped them to make bird boxes and winter hanging baskets.
Funding for the event was provided by Llwynypia Food Co-op, Llwynypia Communities First and the Physical Activity Hub. Weekly produce is generously provided by A Williams and Sons.
Llwynypia Food Coop volunteer Anne Harris said: “I can’t believe how quick this past year has gone, we all really enjoy meeting members of the community. Making fresh produce more accessible for the community of Llwynypia at an affordable price is a strength of the food coop. We look forward to continuing this service to old and new customers for many years to come.”
Deputy Mayor Simon Lloyd added: “I was honoured to attend the anniversary of the Food Co-op, I would like to thank everyone who has been involved in this event and for all their hard work in making it such a success over the year. We are all aware of the importance of healthier diets and this project goes a long way to supporting that by providing quality, nutritious and fresh produce at good prices. Well done to all the volunteers and to the local community that has supported it.”
Llwynypia Food Co-op offers vegetable, fruit and salad bags for £3 each and they contain at least five varieties of different produce.
Also available are stewpacks at £1.50. Bags can be pre-ordered each week with collection the following week.
