The award-winning 2013 Get It Out For Cardiff (GIOFC) student re-use and recycle campaign has concluded with the presentation of a cheque for £2360 to the Lord Mayor for his chosen charity, Foodbank.
Cabinet Member for Environment, Cllr Ashley Govier said, ‘We have ensured this excellent scheme has not stood still and I’m so pleased GIOFC has enjoyed its best year yet as a lot of planning goes into the campaign year in year out. This year, we’ve seen recycling go up by 14% and complaints fall 28% in Cathays, Roath and Plasnewydd while winning a DS Smith recycling award for Award for Best Community Partnership. Our autumn kitchen sales also raised a record £2360 and I’m delighted Foodbank will benefit, so it’s great news all round.’
Student Liaison officer, Emma Robson said, ‘It’s been a brilliant team effort this year and the results have been spectacular. Students are extremely supportive of the campaign and the results show they are recycling more of their unwanted re-usable items, instead of disposing them as waste. I’m so grateful for everybody’s efforts in making this award-winning scheme such a success again. To win another award and raise a record amount for the Lord Mayor’s charity, Foodbank was doubly pleasing. It gives us a great incentive to do even better next year.’
