Former Cardiff and Vale College Kimberley Barker has won the Cowbridge Art Group Annual Prize.
Kimberley, 20 and from Cardiff, was chosen by panel of judges to receive the £100 prize and certificate for her mixed media paintings exploring the concept of beauty in decay. Working directly with organic materials, she produced a series of experimental collages and paintings that lead to the final exhibited works.
Her work featured in ‘It’s All About…’ this year’s annual Cardiff and Vale College exhibition for Art & Design students based at its Colcot road Campus in Barry. The exhibition appeared at the Old Hall Gallery on Cowbridge High Street in the summer.
“The judging panel stressed the difficulty in make the final decision due to the high quality of all the work on display,” CAVC Art & Design Tutor Adrian Metcalfe said. “They felt all the students were worthy of commendation and that the show demonstrated the high level of ability across Cardiff and Vale College’s Art & Design courses.
“They were particularly impressed by the professionalism of the students in presenting their work and the range of subjects they examined. They said it represented the quality of the courses offered by the College and the strength of the teaching team.”
Kimberley studied on the WJEC Level 3 and 4 Foundation Diploma in Art & Design at CAVC. This September she has progressed to a degree level course in Art & Design at Bath Spa University – ranked in the top ten of creative universities by Which?
