The former Chairman and CEO of Sony Corporation, Sir Howard Stringer, who was awarded an Honorary Degree from Swansea University in 2013 is to deliver the next James Callaghan Memorial Lecture at Swansea University on 26 June 2014.
The lecture entitled ‘Networked, Drafted, Yahoo’d, Googled and Tweeted, 50 years in US Media’ (and still standing) will draw on Sir Howard’s hugely successful career in the media industry.
Sir Howard had a distinguished 30-year career at CBS where he was a journalist, producer and senior executive. From 1988 to 1995 he served as president of CBS where he was responsible for all the broadcast activities of its entertainment, news, sports, radio and television stations.
He began work at Sony in May 1997 as president of its US operational unit and was made a Sony group executive officer in May 1998.
In June 2005 he became Chairman and CEO of Sony, overseeing the entire businesses of Sony including its media and electronics subsidiaries. In his role, he was directly instrumental in Sony’s investment in the Sony Technium at Pencoed near Bridgend, one of 12 innovation centres that make up the Technium partnership between Swansea University and the Welsh Government.
In April 2009 he became President of Sony Corporation, also serving as Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Sony Corporation of America. He has been President of Sony Broadband Entertainment Corporation since March 2000.
He stepped down as President and CEO in April 2012 and remained Chairman of Sony Corporation until June 2012 when he became Chairman of the Board of Sony. He retired as Chairman of the Board of Sony in June 2013.
Sir Howard is a Board Member of Talk Talk; Member of the Executive Board of BBC and Board Member of Time Inc.
In 2013, during his visit to Swansea to accept his Honorary Degree, Sir Howard said: “It is a signal honour to be welcomed back to Wales to receive an Honorary Degree from a university whose academic reputation is soaring.”
He also visited the site of the University’s new Bay Campus which he described as “extraordinary” and which he said he was “endorsing with enthusiasm”.
