Plaid Cymru AM and Assembly Finance spokesperson Chris Franks has expressed utter astonishment at a Tory debate this week welcoming the ConDem government’s recent Comprehensive Spending Review (CSR).
It has been widely accepted that the ConDem CSR will have a devastating impact on the communities in Wales particularly in terms of benefit cuts and job losses. The Tory motion tabled for debate in the Senedd today calls on AMs to welcome the ConDem government’s plans.
Plaid Cymru AM Assembly finance spokesperson Chris Franks said:
“The fact that the Tories themselves have the audacity to support the ConDem’s devastating attacks on our nation’s communities is bad enough. But what is truly insulting to communities here is their implication that London ConDem plans should be ‘welcomed’ by the people of Wales.
“We are all too aware of the shattering impact that the ConDem cuts to the public sector will have on jobs in Wales. Not only is a large proportion of the Welsh workforce employed directly by the public sector, a huge number of private sector firms, and therefore jobs, are dependent on their contracts. And I am hugely concerned about the impact that their benefits cuts will have on people in the communities I represent, and across Wales as a whole. The ConDems in Wales should hang their heads in shame if they think that the people of Wales are going to fall for this extraordinarily implausible spin.”
