In October The Cardiff Story Museum will be putting on a series of free events to celebrate different aspects of Cardiff’s heritage.
On Tuesday 25 October at 2pm, visitors will get a fascinating insight into the history of one of Llandaff’s famous landmarks, Insole Court. John Prior Morris, Chairman of The Friends of Insole Court, will deliver a free talk exploring Insole Court’s transformation from a Gothic Revival mansion in the 1870s to its status as an important community hub today.
One of Llandaff’s most famous sons will be the centre of attention on Thursday, October 27 at 11am. The young and the young at heart can enjoy a half term treat with a magical and marvellous look around Roald Dahl’s world.
Uncover the Great Mouse Plot and Dahl’s boyhood memories of Llandaff and Cardiff in this storytelling session delivered by Llandaff Society Chairman Geoff Barton-Greenwood.
Throughout October and November, Llandaff is the focus of the museum’s City Showcase exhibition where visitors can discover more about this unique “city within a city”.
October is also Black History Month, and to celebrate this, the museum is hosting two digital exhibitions, “Black Sporting Heroes of Wales” and “Black Female Role Models of Wales” produced by Black Voluntary Sector Network Wales with the support of Ethnic Minorities Communities First, the Probation Services and Barnardo’s Cymru. The exhibitions will be on show in the Engelhardt Learning Suite from Monday 24th – Sunday 30th October.
Cardiff University lecturer Abi-Bakr Madden BSc (hons) will also deliver two workshops, beginning with “How blacks are betrayed in the Media and Hollywood” on Saturday October 22nd 2pm-5pm. The second workshop, “Black History in Wales”, will take place on Friday 28th October, 2pm-5pm.
Executive Member for Sport, Culture and Leisure, Cllr Nigel Howells, said:” The Cardiff Story Museum is the perfect space for community groups and organisations to host their own talks and exhibitions. I’m delighted the museum is able to support this initiative and to help both groups and individuals showcase their work and causes.”

The Cardiff Story is the new museum dedicated to the history of Cardiff, told through a number of themes. The museum charts the history of the city from the small market town of the 1300s to the cool capital we know today, all told through the eyes of those who made it – its people.
The new museum is located on the site of the iconic Victorian Grade II* listed Old Library. The fun and interactive museum includes a permanent introductory gallery (Cardiff in Context), a fully interactive lifelong learning suite (City Lab), state of the art classrooms, a community showcase gallery and access to a Grade II* Listed tiled corridor.
The museum’s phase 1 development has been completed with support from Cardiff Council, the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Engelhardt family’s Moondance Foundation, the Welsh Government via Museums, Libraries and Archives (CyMAL), the Federation of Museums and Art Galleries Wales and Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales with kind contributions from donors to the Big Give public appeal as well as various community groups across the city.
