Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) lifeguards in Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire were called upon to deal with a number of incidents on the beaches they patrol over the past weekend (24 and 25 July).
Carmarthenshire RNLI lifeguards provided assistance at two separate at Pendine Sands, Carmarthenshire on Sunday 25 July. The first incident saw a two-year-old girl airlifted to Morriston Hospital, Swansea, after falling on to the slipway by the RNLI lifeguard unit.
Lifeguards, who were first on the scene, treated the young girl with oxygen and called for assistance from the Wales Air Ambulance, who then airlifted the casualty to hospital. (photos attached).
The second incident on Pendine Sands saw RNLI lifeguards travel seven miles from their lifeguard unit in an RNLI truck after Coastguards had received a 999 call about a young boy who had injured his foot.
The incident occurred near Ginst Point, at the eastern end of Pendine Sands. A Wales Air Ambulance helicopter was tasked to the scene but not needed.
After the young boy received first aid from lifeguards it was decided he could be taken to outpatients with his parents. The RNLI lifeguards who responded on both incidents were John O’Boyle, James Shuttleworth and Carl Amos.
Two adults who had become stranded after climbing rocks at Tenby North beach were brought to safety by a combined effort of RNLI lifeguards, Tenby RNLI inshore lifeboat and Coastguard.
RNLI lifeguards were first on the scene and ensured the couple – believed to be in their mid-20s – were safe until they were taken to safety by the RNLI inshore lifeboat.
At Castle Beach, Tenby, RNLI lifeguards John Johnston and Paul Lewis administered oxygen to a young woman in her 20s who had taken ill and was in distress.The woman was later taken to hospital for a check-up.
At Broadhaven beach, RNLI lifeguards were involved in the rescue of a 65-year-old kayaker who had capsized just over 100 metres from shore.
The incident occurred just after 1pm on Saturday 24 July, when the kayaker, who was with a kayaking group from east Wales when his craft toppled over.
RNLI lifeguards Darren Hunniford and Harry Evans paddled out on rescue boards to bring the casualty and his craft back to shore. RNLI lifeguard Celyn Owen co-ordinated the rescue from the unit at beach side.
The lifeguards carried out a few medical checks and found that the kayaker was okay and did not require further assistance.
