Residents in Gowerton have joined Swansea Council in paying for a pedestrian crossing to help local children cross a busy road to and from school.
Local police, schools and the Community Council have raised around £10,000 to help Swansea Council install the crossing point at Cecil Road. The Council put a further £15,000 towards the cost of the road safety equipment.
Jeff Green, Swansea Council’s Road Safety Officer, said: “Limited funds from our annual road safety grant meant we couldn’t provide all the funds required to install the pedestrian crossing.
“We’re delighted to work with residents and community groups to improve safety in the area because without their support we would not have been able to install the crossing.”
Cllr John Hague, Cabinet Member for the Environment, said: “The community has really got behind the Council and shown that if everyone works together we can achieve things that would not otherwise be possible.
“I’m delighted that the fundraising events resulted in the extra money needed to install the crossing. I would like to congratulate everyone involved.”
To help raise the cash, local police held a football tournament and a bike ride. Residents also donated books to the local post office and money was ploughed into the fund from the sale of the books. Other events also took place helping to raise money.
Phil Barrow, Neighbourhood Police Officer in Gowerton, helped with the fundraising. He said: “The road outside the school is very busy and there have been one or two near misses involving children.
“We wanted to get involved and help raise the money needed to install a pedestrian crossing.
“The new crossing will help children and others cross the road more safely.”
