Young people from a Caerphilly county borough community have been having fun getting active at a special event held recently.

‘Funky Fun Friday’ was held at Markham Community Centre, and provided an opportunity for local young people to doing something productive with their spare time.

More than 30 young people, aged between 11 and 18 came along to the event, where activities such as a football tournament, tag rugby games and street dance sessions took place.

The day was organised by Caerphilly County Borough Council’s The Hub Team , together with Sports Development, Health and the Upper Sirhowy Valley Partnership.

Cllr Phil Bevan, cabinet member for education and leisure said, “This excellent event enabled local youngsters to pursue a series of activities and spend their spare time doing something fun and proactive, while getting active at the same time”.

St John’s Ambulance also came along to support the day, and Sainsbury donated fruit and juices for the young people on the day.

One young person who took part in Funky Fun Friday said, “I had a great time taking part in the activities, especially the street dance lessons. I think it’s really good that stuff like this is organised for young people to get involved in.”

Following on from the event, a youth sub group has been developed, which aims to involve local young people in the planning of future activities in the area and the Communities First process.

The Hub team facilitates this group, and together the group have decided that they would like to see dance, football and rugby workshops and Duke of Edinburgh award.
