Trunk roads across Wales that will benefit from a £4.8million investment package were outlined today by Deputy First Minister, Ieuan Wyn Jones.
Projects ranging from carriageway repairs to tunnel safety work to improvement schemes will be completed as part of part of an overall £47million capital investment budget that was announced in November.
Schemes outlined for improvement include:
- A55 Pen y Clip Tunnel safety works
- M4 additional central reserve concrete safety barrier at Brynglas
- M4 Bishton – Llanmartin Bridge
- A4042 Llantarnam Bypass resurfacing
- A40 Brecon to Llandovery carriageway repairs
Mr Jones said:
“This investment in our trunk road infrastructure will not only improve the safety and condition of our network but also provide much-needed support to the construction industry as Wales continues its fragile economic recovery.”
“Despite the worst funding settlement from the UK Government since the advent of devolution it further shows the resilient response of the Assembly Government.”
One project that will benefit from investment is the A55 Pen y Clip Tunnel. The proposed works will include the installation of a public address system within the tunnel and also improved emergency signing and lighting.
Persuading the public to quickly evacuate their vehicles in the event of a fire is a recognised problem and the presence of an adequate public address system will assist the safe self evacuation of the public following a road traffic collision.
