Garden waste collections resume

Residents in the Vale of Glamorgan will once again begin to receive their regular kerbside fortnightly garden waste collections as the service has now recommenced.

Garden waste bags are collected on the same week as cardboard and plastic recycling. Content should typically include grass, shrub cuttings, leaves, plants, flowers and most weeds.

Figures from last year (April 2008 – March 2009) show that over 4,100 tonnes of garden waste were collected, highlighting the exceptional effort put in by Vale residents. This year is no different, with early figures indicating that from April 2009 to the end of March 2010 residents have once again exceeded last year’s tonnage.

Cllr Geoff Cox, cabinet member for visible and building services, was keen to praise how well residents have done in terms of garden waste recycling over the past year. He said: “Our Vale garden waste is sent to Penllyn Farm in Cowbridge where it is composted, turned into a soil enhancer and reused back on their farm land. I would like to say to our residents and all those involved, well done and keep up the good work, for this year too.”

Garden waste must be placed out by 7am in either green reusable fabric bags, costing £1, or biodegradable bags (three for £1). Unfortunately, we cannot collect garden waste in any other type of bag or container.

Each style bag is sold at both the council’s Civic and Dock offices in Barry, the Alps office in Wenvoe, as well as Llantwit Major, Cowbridge and Penarth libraries.

Recycling officer Michelle Fitzpatrick said: “As the weather improves and gardeners are out in force, we urge residents to remember that the main purpose of any of their recycling efforts is to reduce the burden we place on landfill. We are delighted that more and more residents get involved every year but we would still urge people to consider whether they could do more.”

The service will be in place until the winter, when gardeners can instead book recycling collections through the council’s ring and request service.
