Reacting to the report into the recent coastal flooding in Rhyl, local AM, Ann Jones has called on the Natural Resources Minister, Alun Davies to authorise the recommended works to be done to flood defences in the Garford Road area.
Ms Jones said: “The report into the floods that caused significant damage to the East End of Rhyl has now been published and I welcome its recommendation that improvements should be made to flood defences in Rhyl.
“I have asked the Natural Resources Minister to make sure these works take place right away in order to give the local community reassurance that all that can be done is being done to ensure that properties are protected in the future.
“It is of no comfort to those to those residents flooded for the second time that this report makes recommendations, without the promise of action. I have asked the Minister to closely monitor the speed and effectiveness of how this recommendation is carried out”.
The report by Natural Resources Wales, has recommended to the Minister that: “options to seek improvements to the standard of protection at the Garford Road area of Rhyl should be identified and evaluated. This should include detailed hydraulic analysis of the capacity and performance of the storage lagoon. This should include an assessment of the stairwell and slipway openings and the interaction with the adjacent golf course area”.
Ms Jones has also pledged to ensure that all the properties affected in Rhyl East and in St Asaph should not be excluded by insurance companies for future insurance cover. Ms Jones will be working closely with Chris Ruane MP and the Association of British Insurers to enable those householders to be able access insurance protection for the future.
