Secure gates could soon be installed at a city centre lane to cut down on crime and anti-social behaviour.
Swansea Council’s Cabinet is being asked to back the submission of a planning application for a gating order at the lane between Orchard Street and High Street behind West Glamorgan House to keep troublemakers at bay.
The City Centre ISTAM group (Information Sharing Tactical Action Meeting) is behind the proposal and funding is being sought from the Welsh Government.
The gating order is one of a series of actions identified by Swansea Council in a City Centre Action Plan aimed at helping traders during difficult economic times and cutting down on crime and anti-social behaviour.
Cllr Chris Holley, Swansea Council Leader, said: “We’re determined to make the experience of coming into Swansea city centre as safe and as positive as possible for traders, shoppers, residents and visitors.
“This is why we work so hard alongside the police and our other partners to take action in areas where crime and anti-social behaviour are identified as especially problematic.
“This lane has been highlighted as a problem spot and, while Police and City Centre Rangers have upped their patrols in the area, we’d still like to have more of an impact.
“We’re confident that putting secure gates in place will rid the location of crime and anti-social behaviour and send a message to trouble-makers that inappropriate behaviour won’t be tolerated in our city centre.”
A gating order for the Strand Tunnel could also soon be considered to cut down on crime and anti-social behaviour there.
